I am a qualified secondary school teacher with eight years of teaching experience. I have been a secondary school History and English teacher for the past four years and I have also worked as an English as a Foreign Language teacher and a tutor (for SATs and 11+ exams). I have extensive experience of exam preparation and supporting pupils with special educational needs. I am familiar with a wide range of effective teaching styles and I always keep up to date with changes to the school curriculum.

I graduated with a First-Class History Degree from the University of Newcastle. To further my interest in Latin American History, I completed an M.Phil. in Latin American Studies from the University of Cambridge. Following this, I worked for several years as an English as a Foreign Language teacher and primary school tutor. I then gained a PGCE in Secondary School History from Manchester Metropolitan University with Distinction. Since then I have taught at grammar, comprehensive and private schools which has enabled me refine and hone my teachings skills.

Tutoring experience

Since graduating with a Distinction in PGCE Secondary History from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2017, I have taught at grammar, comprehensive and private schools in the UK. I have taught English to Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 pupils and History to Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 pupils. As a classroom teacher, I have helped pupils prepare for the following exam boards: Eduqas English Language and Literature, AQA English Language and English Literature, Edexcel GCSE History, OCR GCSE History and OCR A-level History. I have also coached pupils privately to pass English and History GCSE exams for a variety of exam boards.

Whilst working at an after-school tuition centre in London I coached pupils to pass 11+ exams at Haberdashers’ Aske’s, Henrietta Barnett, Merchant Taylors and the John Lyon School. Additionally, I taught English and Mathematics to 4 to 11 year olds to prepare them for the UK SATs tests.

Whilst working as an English as a Foreign Language teacher I helped students prepare for the IELTs exam and taught General, Business and Legal English.

Approach to tutoring

Every one of my lessons is tailored to the individual as I appreciate every student has a unique way of learning. To ensure students achieve their full potential, I teach exam techniques and effective time management skills, as well as marking practice exam papers and setting regular homework. Although it is important to learn successful exam strategies, I still want my lessons to be enjoyable as I believe students learn more effectively this way. As a result, my History GCSE exam grades were the highest in my school department last summer (both by average grade and value added).

In the current climate, an increasing number of lessons will need to be online. As I currently work as a tutor online I am aware of the best ways to teach online effectively, so you can rest assured of a quality teaching experience. I understand a lot of students and parents may be concerned about the current closure of schools. However, I would like to assure you that I will do everything I can to prevent your son or daughter from falling behind.
