I have a genuine love for tutoring History and English. I spend much of my spare time reading new books and love to hear my students' opinions on historical sources and literature. Tuition with me is an invitation to analyse texts together. In doing so, your skills of analysis will progress to the point where you can analyse texts yourself because you know what to look for. I have enormous experience in academic writing and will guide you to write clearly and concisely. Being able to articulate complex ideas in an understandable way is a key skill.

I am open and trustworthy as a person. I am DBS-checked and am happy to prove this upon request.

Tutoring experience

I have successfully tutored students in the subjects below:

Key Stage 3 History
GCSE History
A Level History
iGCSE History
GCSE English Literature
A Level English Literature
GCSE English Language
A Level English Language
iGCSE English Language

I have a proven academic background:

- Durham University MA Medieval and Early Modern Studies (Postgraduate Scholar - Full Scholarship)
- High Distinctions in History and Latin at University of Newcastle (Australia) as an exchange student
- BA History First Class Honours from the University of Liverpool

In addition, I have succeeded as an Academic Support Worker for disabled students at Bristol University and the University of Manchester. I have 4 years of experience carrying out note-taking and Study Assistance for students in many different subject areas. This is a job requiring a high level of responsibility and care.

Approach to tutoring

My tuition is built around the particular student's needs. I am able to provide a FREE assessment if you are able to send me a piece of coursework or homework. If you want to improve your grade, I can highlight what areas you need to improve after looking at your work.

I continue checking your progress during tuition by setting regular homework (based on what we have covered in class) and providing detailed feedback for homework. I have a system of marking which highlights the part of homework which requires improvement and we go through this during tuition, with me encouraging the student to find the answer within themselves. We work collaboratively. This fosters independence in my students and enables them to be able to analyse texts themselves (the key skill in History and English) and write an accomplished answer by themselves.

I am a qualified Teaching English As A Foreign Language Tutor. An awareness of learning styles is very important when teaching a new language. I have experience in preparing my own lesson material aimed at visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learners. For younger students in History, for example, I use a range of textual and visual sources to teach new material (visual primary sources are a great complement to reading).
